Inmate Serving Life Sentence Commits Suicide

Embu Prison

A prisoner serving a life sentence at Embu GK prison committed suicide under unclear circumstances on Christmas day.

Prison services records reveal that the inmate who had been serving life at Meru Prison since 2013 was transferred to Embu GK Prison in 2016.

Confirming the incidence, Henry Ochieng the Prison officer in charge said the robbery with violence convict hanged himself using his own clothes.

The inmate whose name has been established to be Silas Kirimi was reportedly jailed 6 years ago for robbery with violence, an offense he committed at Kangeta in Igembe South, Meru County.

The deceased reportedly differed with another convict before he took his life.

According to Embu County police commander Daniel Rukunga, investigations have been launched into the incident.

The body of the deceased was moved to the Embu Level Five Hospital mortuary.
