One dead, tens hospitalised as Cholera outbreak hits Kisumu

At least one person has died, and 31 others are hospitalized in a suspected cholera outbreak in Kisumu County.

The director of medical services Dr Dickens Onyango while confirming the incident said the government had put in place measures to avert further spread of the disease.

He cautioned residents living along River Awach to avoid consuming water from the river which is suspected to be the source of the contamination.

Kisumu County residents have been cautioned to be on high alert following a suspected outbreak of cholera which has since claimed one life.

Four of those exhibiting cholera symptoms are admitted at Gita Hospital in Kajulu where it was first reported the patients had cholera related symptoms.

27 others have since been treated and discharged.

The outbreak is not the first that residents of Ong’adi village in Kajulu are experiencing.

A similar outbreak claimed the life of at least one person and left several hospitalised a few weeks ago.

County officials have ruled out closure of open-air eateries and feasting in funerals citing the latest outbreak was not directly linked to the two sources.

They are however carrying out tests along river Awach that cuts across the Ongadi village to ascertain if it is the source of the latest outbreak.

Locals however seem to suspect the source of the outbreak is the river citing lack of  toilets and piped water in the locale.

They also want a local dispensary equipped both with enough personnel and equipment to ensure timely intervention in case of an outbreak.
