Meru County is ready to host the historic international Mountain Run Championship Meru-2020 at the foot of Mt. Kenya this Saturday, February 22nd.
The race will start at Kenya School of Adventure and Leadership (KeSAL) at 8 am and will attract more than 3000 domestic and international participants in a bid to raise funds to establish a Meru Cancer Institute, promote environmental conservation and tourism.
The race is expected to raise funds to help expand the oncology unit at Meru Level 5 Hospital.
This will be a relief for patients who struggle seeking treatment in Nairobi and abroad.
The County also seeks to set up a community mountain bongo conservancy that will help protect the animals which are facing extinction in the region. This will, in turn, promote tourism.
More than 10 ambassadors from European Union, British and Kenya Army, United Nations officials among other dignitaries will also take part in the championship.
The event is the first of its kind and targets 5000 participants and spectators.
A team of elite athletes took to the mountain to test the conditions ahead of the mountain run on Saturday.
Former London and New York Marathon Douglas Wakihuri, who is the head coach at the camp, says everything is ready.
The winner will pocket a cash prize of Ksh. 500,000, while the second and third place will receive Ksh. 250,000 and Ksh. 15,000 respectively.
