Garissa Governor H. E. Ali Korane today hosted Interior Cabinet Secretary Hon Dr. Fred Matiang’i for a security meeting aimed at addressing Al Shabaab menace in Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties.
The Governor who had a lengthy discussion with CS in his office together with his Mandera counterpart H E Ali Roba and National security team, pledged to collaborate with all teams in combating the unprecedented attacks by the Alshabaab that is hurting development in the region.
Korane who later addressed chiefs and the provincial administration from the region in the company of the CS , said chiefs will be empowered and more security officers deployed to tackle the militia.
This follows a proposal forwarded to the national security team after local leaders meeting last week that he chaired and attended by political leaders from the county.
“We are united in the fight against the common enemy that is a threat to our development in the region and we have high hopes to defeat them,” Korane said during a press briefing.
He said the summoning of all chiefs from the North-Eastern region was significant as it demonstrated the seriousness of the threats the region was facing with the recent attacks.
He said such a meeting was last convened in 1985 during the District focus for rural development
On his part, Dr. Mitiang’i thanked the county Governors from Garissa, Wajir and Mandera for their commitment in the fight against terrorism.
He said the proposal from the Garissa Governor following leaders security meeting he convened last week will be implemented alongside other action plans from the on-going regional security meeting.
The CS announced immediate crackdown on contraband goods that he said served as direct revenue for Al shabab.
“All those involved in the cross border racket are fueling the death of Kenyans and we will deal with them,” said the cabinet secretary.
Mandera Governor H E Ali Roba said upscaled plans from both the County and National Government will be a fatal blow to the Al shabab militia that paralyzed the development of the region.
Roba urged chiefs and security personnel to cooperate with the locals who feel adversely affected following the closure of schools, hospitals and roads rendered impassable by the Al shabab militants.
Top National security officials and county present were inspector General of police Hilary Mutyambai, Deputy inspector General Noor Gabow, General service unit commandant Douglas Kirocho Kanja, Secretary internal security Moffat Kangi, secretary National Administration Mongo Chimwaga, North Eastern regional Commissioner Musyoki Ndalana.
Others included Garissal Deputy Governor H E Abdi Dagane, Wajir Deputy Governor H E Ahmed Ali Muktar ,County security committees from Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties.
