The Mt Kenya Foundation’s efforts to reach out to key political bases ahead of the 2022 elections intensified yesterday when it hosted political leaders from the north eastern region led by CS Ukur Yattani.
In a colorful event at Safari Park that attracted several political bigwigs from ASAL Counties, the newly formed UPYA Movement pledged to work with Mt Kenya leaders on economic issues and other matters of mutual interest.
“I don’t think we have ever had such a meeting. It will be historic as the 11 ASAL counties converge with our brothers from Mt Kenya to discuss development and other important issues affecting us,” Keynan said, who is also the Upya deputy leader.
When UPYA was launched last month, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani, Governors Ali Korane (Garissa), Mohammed Kuti (Isiolo) and Ali Muktar (Wajir) announced they would support Raila’s bid for the presidency.
Former county bosses Godana Doyo (Isiolo), Nathif Jama (Garissa) and Ahmed Abdullahi (Wajir), veteran politician Hussein Maalim Mohamed and former Rift Valley provincial commissioner Hassan Noor were also present during the launch of the movement.
“The Meeting was aimed at bolstering relations between the two regions and chart a common Political path for the North Eastern Region. The agenda was mainly a discussion on how to further strengthen conversations on unity, togetherness and cohesion,” CS Yattani said.
The Mt Kenya Foundation has been meeting various outfits allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta. This is a third meeting of the kind after meeting with Raila Odinga and OKA Principals.
CS Yatani has been upfront in ensuring that the North Counties work together and support each other as well as work with the government in their agenda of building bridges.
The Upya movement, formed by northern Kenya leaders to champion for the region’s interests, has also announced plans to transition to a political party in the future.
Isiolo Governor Mohammed Kuti revealed that the process of legalising the movement has kicked off. Kuti said that they would champion the political and social interests of the people.
“We have started the process of legalizing this movement and we have picked CS Yatani as our spokesperson and given him the nod to work with other leaders,” he said.
