Embattled Governor Mike Sonko has today appointed Ms. Anne Kananu Mwenda as Nairobi Deputy Governor.
Until her nomination, Ms Mwenda was Chief Officer Disaster Management Nairobi County.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, Governor Sonko says that the move is in response to the Supreme Court’s advisory regarding the nomination of a Deputy Governor dated March 2018.
Sonko notes that there was a legal vacuum then, which has not been cured to this day, to provide for a clear framework for the replacement of a Deputy Governor.
“This is a position the Senate concurred with when I appeared before the Senate Committee on Devolution and intergovernmental relations in April 2019.’ reads the letter in part.
Governor Sonko says that his move to appoint a Deputy Governor is to ensure the stability of Nairobi County.
Ms. Kananu was among the original chief officers who were vetted and approved by the assembly in April 2018.
She has survived the constant reshuffles until November last year when she was placed as the chief officer for water in an acting capacity.
Her nomination comes two years after Polycap Igathe resigned, stating he could not continue to remain in office because he had failed to “earn the trust” of Sonko.
Sonko nominated self-declared general Miguna Miguna as deputy governor in May 2018, but the nomination was shot down.
